Sign
Language Services International, Inc. (SLSI)
began as Sign Language Services in 1987 to provide quality and dependable
Sign Language interpreting to the Baton Rouge community. At that
time, the staff had combined experience of over forty years in a
variety of capacities: interpreter, educator, advocate, program
administrator, Sign Language instructor, interpreter educator, lecturer,
consultant, community leader, and parent. Since 1987, services have
expanded to meet the changing demands of a vibrant Deaf Community.
This
expansion now includes the Baton Rouge region, the state, the national,
and the international levels. Interpreting
services have been provided for international conferences within
the United States and overseas. SLSI has
consulted
with government agencies (United States and abroad) to provide expertise
in the development of testing of Sign Language and interpreting
abilities for state and national certification. A 24-lesson
Sign Language course
was developed to allow for a self-paced introduction to American
Sign Language for those who might be interested in learning America's
3rd most common language.
SLSI
is an Associate Member of the European Forum for Sign Language Interpreters.
SLSI is also helping to provide infrastructure
development for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters
in conjunction with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.,
representatives from 11 countries, the European Forum of Sign Language
Interpreters, and the World Federation of the Deaf.
